humanos
My mom's story
I decided to make a drawing for my mom's story because she spoke to me about all the people and opportunities she had in her rancho in Mexico, along with the new opportunities and world awaiting her in the United States. She spoke to me about having teachers who were really close to here and her family. She said that the creation of a community and union among everyone there allowed for her to love learning, enjoy school, and continue going even if the school only went up the the 6th grade. Her dad never allowed her to just stayed home and always sent her to repeat those grades and re-learn everything. At Mexico my mom was studying nursing with the clinic at her rancho and knew how to give vaccines and help the doctor there. But, she knew the opportunities that she had there won't be the same to the ones her children can have in the United States which is why she decided to come over to California and follow her husband and my father Clemente Landeros. What stood out to me the most from her story is how when she cross the border one shoe ended up falling on the side of Mexico and the other stayed on her as she stepped foot on U.S. soil. This was significant because I felt it to show her past being left behind but still taking with her what she learned to the U.S. which is signified by the shoe she has on in the picture. I felt that this really captures her story and what she had to go through in deciding to move on and search for new opportunities while still leaving part of her in Mexico with most her family. The advice she had for teachers was to be friendly and welcoming to parents. To try forming a community and a close knit family among the families, students, and staff. She thinks this is what shows students that they have lots of people who care about their success and will make them feel more comfortable at school. I highly agree with my mom and I really enjoyed working on this drawing and video with her.
